About me

My life in Table Tennis

I started playing table tennis when I went to senior school. The school had three tables that were set up all the time and there were always plenty of players willing to play at any time. So, we all learned together without any formal coaching, which explains a lot about the way I play.

We entered teams into the local league in Woolwich, Kent.  We won various divisions as we moves up the school. When I left school, I also played in the North-West Kent and London Banks League.

When I moved to Southampton, I started in Southampton, but also played in leagues in Salisbury, Fareham and Portsmouth.  I also still played in London Banks for a couple of years. I also played for Hampshire and played British League and the competition circuits.

I moved across to Sussex in 1991 and started in Brighton.  Over the years, I have also played in leagues in Worthing, Eastbourne, Hastings and Crawley & Horsham as well as London Banks and occasionally in Colchester. I have played for Sussex and in the senior and veterans’ British League and occasional tournaments.

My articles and reports mainly stem from my activity in the management and running to the sport.

Table Tennis in England needs to move towards:

  • a more prominent position in world table tennis
  • to organise a joined-up structure for the game to flourish domestically

To ensure that all players have the opportunity to play table tennis:

  • at the right level
  • wherever they live
  • to enable their enjoyment
  • or should they so wish to develop their skills towards competing at the highest levels.

TTE Annual Conference and General Meeting 2023

This is the note that I took during the TTE Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting in July 2023. It was produced primarily to report back to Sussex as I was representing the county at meeting. Obviously, it may well be useful to report back for any other county. This is not the official minutes of the meeting. TTE will produce those in due course.

Many of the ideas in this article may already be happening, but are possibly not well publicised and the successful processes need to be formalised so they can be repeated and sustainable.
